Mount Vernon Washington School District

Marian Wright Edelman once said, “Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.”  Sixty miles north of Seattle, you’ll find a school district set on changing the lives of the students and positively growing the community.

The Mount Vernon School District is located in the fertile Skagit Valley, where prosperity meets opportunity.  The district is diverse and employs nearly 1,000 employees.  Those employees serve 6,700+ students in grades Kindergarten – 12 at six elementary schools (grades K-5), two middle schools (grades 6-8), one high school (grades 9-12), and one home school parent partnership (grades K-12).

Mount Vernon School District Mission and Vision

Listening is part of any good leadership, and the Board of Directors are using the input from staff, students, parents, and other community members to prepare the District’s mission and vision and to establish goals that will guide the District focus for the next 3–5 years.  Those goals are:

  • 100% of our students will graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in post-secondary education, careers, and life.
  • Students will graduate with inspiration and be critical thinkers who embrace diversity and are committed to the betterment of their own lives and the lives of others.
  • To expect, encourage, and facilitate the pursuit of excellence and life-long learning in our students, equipping them for future success and happiness.

Key Strategies for Success

In order to prepare students for a lifetime of success, the District needs to start with a solid educational foundation.  The Early Learning program promotes children to be ready to start kindergarten and foster successful transitions throughout grades K-3, which ensures students meet grade level standards in reading and math by 3rd grade.  That foundation will inspire every student to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills with high expectations and instruction that is engaging, research-based, and relevant.

As students progress through each grade, they can expect engagement from their parents and local community to foster an environment with powerful learning experiences that will lead to their success.  That environment will also encourage, develop, and strengthen student independence, perseverance, creativity, and a willingness to take risks and embrace new ideas, laying the foundation for continuous learning.  That continuous curiosity and hunger for learning is what makes the District perfect for your students.

High standards bring the best individuals, and they are continually seeking dedicated individuals to join their highly motivated staff.  They provide a commitment of equity to every student and offer what they need to be successful.  They offer a school climate that emphasizes student safety, health and well-being, and respect for all members of the school community.  Each level of District staff offers professional collaboration that is focused on increasing performance and open, timely, and reciprocal communication.

Regardless of a student’s chosen path, education after high school is essential for success.  The Mount Vernon School District believes that a four-year college or university may not be for everyone.

There are other options available, such a trade schools and other post-secondary education.  The District goal is to start early and prepare students to meet the challenges that lay ahead.
